United Airlines review: Sydney to Los Angeles – Boeing 787, Economy Plus

A free upgrade almost made up for the change in itinerary.

To take advantage of the three public holidays in April, we booked flights on United from Sydney to California (into Los Angeles, out of San Francisco) during the Black Friday sales in November.

Our flight to Los Angeles ended up being cancelled a few months before departure and we instead had to fly to San Francisco first and then onto LA. It meant that our travel time would be about four hours longer and involve two flights. I asked for an upgrade and United obliged, offering us seats in Economy Plus. More on that later.

Would I fly with United again?

Yes, I probably would, though I would be wary of schedule changes. In recent years I've flown regularly to New York and had to change at LAX, so if this flight had been onward to New York, it wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway to fly from either LA or San Francisco. However, flying to LA via SFO from Sydney is another story and an unnecessarily long way to get there.

That said, getting the opportunity to try Economy Plus was nice and I would consider upgrading to it in the future, if the price is right. There was an option to do that at check-in, for a fee, which I assume is based on the availability of the flight. The seats were comfortable, the service was pretty good and the entertainment system kept me entertained.
