France and Spain made the list but find out where else our wanderlust lies.

We're sure we're not the only ones to plan a trip to the Amalfi Coast based on a single post on Instagram. Or to get a whole new case of wanderlust after reading a blog post on a new cheese and wine festival in France.

As it turns out, we're actually in the majority thanks to new research conducted by Busabout, Europe's hop-on-hop-off-style coach network. It seems that over 80% of travellers surveyed have booked or planned to book a trip because of something seen on social media.

The Travel Trends Report surveyed 400 Australians aged between the ages of 18 and 48 and discovered that 82% of travellers look for inspiration from social media and blogs versus more traditional sources.

59% are planning to head overseas in the next 12 months, compared to 28% who are unsure and there were 12 clear European destinations that Aussies are dreaming of visiting.

Top 12 travel destinations in Europe for 18-48-year-olds

    1. Greece
    2. Italy
    3. Ireland
    4. Norway
    5. Spain
    6. France
    7. Portugal
    8. Switzerland
    9. United Kingdom
    10. Germany
    11. Croatia
    12. Netherlands

Fortunately, that picture-perfect European getaway doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Of the top 12, 4 also made it to our cheapest places to visit over the European summer list. Greece, Spain, Italy and Germany all offer great value when looking at flights, on-ground costs and conversion rates.

The Travel Trends Report also revealed that 8 in 10 travellers prefer to design their own trip over a fixed itinerary. In response to this and a changing attitude towards accommodation (65% choose hotels, Airbnb or private rooms over dorms), Busabout has developed "Adventure Planner". Travellers will be able to create and book their own itinerary including door to door transport using the new tool.
