How to choose your campervan
When choosing a campervan, consider:
- How many people will be travelling?
- What is your budget?
- Will you need a functional kitchen, shower and toilet?
- Do you want to go off-road or are you happy to stick to sealed roads?
- Will you be comfortable driving a larger vehicle?
Types of campervans explained
Campervan
A van fitted with a sleeping area at the back, furnishings, storage space and often cooking equipment.
- Sleeps: 2-5 people
- Cost: Low-medium
- Size: Small, car-sized vehicle that's easy to park and drive
- Can include: Kitchenette, sink and fridge but no shower or toilet
- Choose between a low-top for two people or a high-top for five people that you can stand up in.
4WD Campervans
A 4WD with sleeping space attached. Ideal for anyone with a high level of driving experience who is seeking an off-the-beaten-track adventure.
- Sleeps: 2 people
- Cost: Medium
- Size: 4WD/medium SUV
- Can include: Attached sleeper
- Higher rental costs due to the higher insurance liabilities.
Motorhome
A large, luxurious self-contained vehicle with a toilet and shower perfect for large groups and long road trips.
- Sleeps: Up to 4-8 people
- Cost: High
- Size: Large, typically 9-14 metres long
- Can include: Dining area, sitting room, kitchenette with sink, fridge, freezer, stove and oven
- Like a home on wheels as it's fully self-contained.
Station wagon
A simple, low-cost option for small parties who don't mind sacrificing comfort. The back converts into a double bed.
- Sleeps: 1-2 people
- Cost: Low
- Size: Medium-sized vehicle that's easy to drive
- Includes: No extras included
- Park for free in many locations if not camping.
