Of late, we've seen a number of phones adopt the "pro" suffix to indicate that they're high-end premium units. Despite its use, the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 doesn't join their ranks in any real way. Instead, it's a distinctly budget-end phone with a mix of compromises and just a few standout features.

Design

  Huawei describes the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 as having a "classic" design, which is the marketing speak way of saying that it has a basic design. It's equipped with a 6.26 inch IPS LCD display with a single teardrop style notch at the top that houses the camera. The bottom bezel is mostly noticeable thanks to a prominent Huawei logo, while the rear has a simple two lens camera bump and not much more in the way of adornment.

  It's not a noticeably high resolution screen, with just a 1520x720 resolution, but that's not entirely unusual at this kind of price range.

  While Huawei appears to produce the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 in at least a couple of colours according to its specifications page, in Australia it's available in black only. Again, that's a consequence of its budget status, where compromises are the norm.

  Huawei as a company has made significant progress in pushing the science of phone cameras forwards, but the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 plays it very simple indeed, with a rear dual lens array comprising a 13MP f/1.8 primary lens and secondary 2MP focusing lens. Huawei's often added lots of camera modes and AI-based photo tweaking to its phones, and while we've yet to put the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 through its paces, you can expect that kind of refinement here.

  Huawei Australia doesn't list a fingerprint sensor as being present on the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 (although it seems to be present on some international models), but it does offer facial unlocking via the front-facing 16MP camera. There's no sign of additional depth sensors here, however, so that's likely to be a very simple flat image identification process, not the more complex facial mapping found on more premium phones. Again, that's to be expected for what is a cheap phone.

  The Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 450 processor, a low-end part very much designed to end up in this kind of phone. It's matched to just 3GB of RAM, so don't expect particularly fast performance, even for a budget end phone.

  It's also not particularly well blessed in the storage department. Huawei lists it as having just 32GB of onboard storage, which is low by 2019 standards. Bear in mind that the existing Android operating system, Huawei's own EMUI launcher and any pre-installed apps will eat into that 32GB significantly. Thankfully it can take microSD expansion cards to boost internal memory.

  It's disappointing to see Huawei selling a phone with Android 8.1 as the pre-installed operating system, given we're up to Android 10 now. Given Huawei's well-publicised US trading ban, the odds of seeing any kind of update to Android 9 or Android 10 for what is a budget phone seem very slim indeed.

Battery life

  The Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 doesn't particularly stand out against other budget phones for processor, camera or screen technology choices, but it appears that's because Huawei's saved the money to put into the battery. While 4,000mAh isn't the largest battery we've seen on a budget range phone, it's definitely stretching up there compared to most of the rest of the market. If you're forever running out of power before the end of the day, the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 should meet your needs amply.

  Huawei's offered up some very good budget phones in years gone past, but the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 can't help but feel a little average for a 2019 handset. It's not helped by the ongoing uncertainty when it comes to Huawei's ability to offer Android upgrades, especially those vital security updates for its phones. Given it's already two versions of Android behind, it's arguably a wiser idea to look at other phones in this price bracket.
