Why the Galaxy A53 could be Samsung’s best bang for buck phone this year

The Galaxy A53 has just been unveiled. With its beefy specs and sub-$700 price, it might be the best value for money from Samsung in 2022.

Samsung recently dropped 5 brand new mid-range phones as part of its A Series range. But the one that has really caught my eye is the Samsung Galaxy A53. At least on paper, it seems to be a nice blend of premium specs at a much cheaper price point, and that's worth paying attention to.

Interestingly, the A53 isn't the flagship of the new A Series. That title belongs to the A73. It too has excellent specs, but many of them are shared with the A53, which is a full $100 cheaper.

So let's talk about it.

The Samsung Galaxy A53 has a lot in common with the S22, which came out earlier this month. They include:

  • 120Hz variable refresh rate on the Super AMOLED+ screen
  • A 8GB/256GB RAM and storage option
  • 5,000mAh battery
  • 5G

Of course, there are some differences when it comes to the sizes, water resistance rating, processor and the cameras.

The last point is particularly significant. The S22 has a 50MP primary lens, 10MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide. Comparatively, the A53 has a 64MP primary lens and a 12MP ultra-wide, and dual macro and depth lenses.

On paper, this is still quite good and I look forward to seeing how it plays out in real-world testing. After all, it's not just about the hardware anymore. As I found during my S22 review period, the software does a lot of the heavy lifting with the camera, and the A53 won't have that same advantage.

Still, you can't argue with the fact that the A53 is offering flagship specs at a much cheaper price point. It starts at just $699 in Australia, whereas the S22 starts at $1,249.

To be able to get things like the 120Hz refresh rate, 8GB RAM and a 5,000mAh battery for more than $550 cheaper makes it worth considering – especially if you don't mind not having all the bells and whistles.

But it is worth keeping in mind this is speculative and based off the specs and price alone. I haven't been able to try an A53 for myself yet. And I do wonder about things like the battery life.

The entire S22 series this year had the same sized battery as the A53, and they all had so-so battery life results. Considering that the A53 is a cheaper phone, I wonder if its battery will suffer from the 120Hz screen and 5G.

That being said, it doesn't have as powerful a processor as the S22 series, so perhaps that will help balance it?

Again, without trying it, I can't say – but it would be the first thing I'd test because it's incredibly important.

If you are interested in the Samsung Galaxy A53, it's now on pre-order and will go on sale on April 1. Amazon also has a pre-order bonus that will get you a free pair of Galaxy Buds 2 valued at $219.

It comes in Awesome Black and Awesome Blue, and pricing starts at $699 in Australia.
