Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: What we know so far (Updated)

The upcoming addition to Samsung's foldable phone line has been the subject of consistent rumours, so let's take a look at what we know.

We were very impressed with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, but we thought there was definite room for improvement. Well, with plenty of reports around regarding its successor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, let's take a look at what we can expect from the next edition in the line.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 release date

Update (26/7/2022): It's extremely likely the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 will be unveiled August 10 at the Samsung Unpacked event. Other devices we expect to see released include the Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Buds Pro 2.

Leakers have fuelled optimism among customers that the Fold 4 will see a price cut compared to its predecessors, thanks to increases in production efficiency. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has an eye-watering RRP of $2,499. So a significant reduction there would be very welcome, please and thank you Samsung.

Update (26/7/2022): Leaks have suggested that dreams of a cheaper Fold 4 will not be coming true after a European retailer accidentally released a price list for the model. It looks like a modest price increase will be taking place instead.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 camera

The most recent leak regarding the Fold 4 concerns its camera. It will purportedly have a triple rear camera, with a 50MP main camera and 3x optical zoom. This is a serious improvement over the 12MP lens and 2x zoom of the Fold 3, but still falls well short of the Galaxy S22 Ultra's 108MP camera.

Or does it? According to the same leak, "software optimisation" will actually make the Fold 3's camera superior to that of the S22 Ultra. If Samsung really can pull this off, the Fold 4 will be an impressive offering indeed. Since it hasn't gone all-out on camera hardware, price and bulk can be kept to a minimum, while the software does all the hard work.

As you may have gathered, Samsung hasn't done a terribly good job of keeping the Fold 4 under wraps. In fact, we have alleged full 360 degree renders of the product. Enjoy:

As you can see, these renders suggest cameras that are individually embedded into the phone, rather than in one pillbox like the Fold 3. According to this leak, the displays will remain the same size (6.2 and 7.6 inches), and they are expected to maintain the Fold 3's 120Hz refresh rate.

The Fold 4 will supposedly be lighter than the 3, weighing in at 260g, and it won't have a built-in S Pen.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 specs

One of the major downfalls of the Fold 3 was battery. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but according to rumour, the Fold 4 will feature the same battery size as its predecessor, 4,400mAh. It's not puny by any means, but since foldable phones feature 2 large displays, this level of power is pretty suboptimal.

But just like how Samsung will reportedly use software to extract more than expected out of its camera, the same can be true for battery life. It's likely heard the grumblings of consumers the world over, and will do everything it can to improve the Fold 4 in this regard.

If this article hasn't been speculative enough for you, the chipset the Fold 4 is rumoured to be using is also, itself, a rumour. The Fold 4 will reportedly feature the as-yet-unconfirmed Snapdragon 8 Generation 1 Plus. Of course, the Snapdragon 8 Plus isn't exactly a far-fetched concept, so this seems very plausible.

Naturally, some new rumours have cropped up ahead of the phone's presumed imminent unveiling. As stated above, a price increase appears to be on the way for the Fold 4.

More renders have been leaked, which don't appear to contradict the original set of preview shots. Additionally, a choice of 4 colours is on the menu for the new phone – beige, burgundy red, grey green and phantom black.
