Samsung reveals details of Galaxy S8’s Exynos 8995 processor
Higher performance and much lower battery consumption for Samsung’s in-house mobile CPU.
While we know that Samsung won’t be formally launching the Galaxy S8 at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2017 event in Barcelona, the technology giant isn’t exactly keeping quiet about what’s going to be happening under the hood of its latest premium smartphone.
As with previous generations of Galaxy S handsets, it will offer the S8 in two variants depending on the intended market for the phone, with some countries seeing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 CPU, while others get the Exynos 8895 instead.
Samsung had already teased the Exynos variant previously, but it has now released a trove of technical information about the new inhouse CPU version. It uses a 10nm FinFet (Fin Field Effect Transistor) process to produce an octo-core chip with, as per Samsung’s claims, some significant improvements over previous Exynos generations.
Samsung says that the Exynos 8995 will deliver up to 27% higher performance than previous processor generations.
The Exynos 8995 will come with an integrated gigabit modem for up to 1Gbps downstream and 150Mbps upstream connections, which could make it a very tasty contender when it launches locally, given both Telstra and Optus’ moves into higher-speed 4G LTE networks. On the power side, most impressively, Samsung is claiming that it can deliver all of this goodness with up to 40% less battery consumption.
If history is any guide, we’re more likely to see the Exynos variant of the Samsung Galaxy S8 here in Australia, although if you’re keen on all things Qualcomm, most of the directly imported versions of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have been the Snapdragon variants.
