Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 8 on 23 August

Samsung's hoping to ignite interest in its larger smartphone brand at the end of August.

It had been rumoured for some time that Samsung was going to have an official launch for the Galaxy Note 8 in late August prior to rolling out the handset in the September/October timeframe, and this morning, the company has made that more or less official.

Samsung has sent out an invite to selected journalists for one of its Galaxy Unpacked events to be held at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City on 23 August 2017 at 11am New York time. For Australians, that means it'll actually be around 1am on Thursday 24 August thanks to that pesky international dateline.

Samsung doesn't explicitly namedrop the Note 8 in the invitation, simply referring to it as the "ultimate multitasking device for those who want to do bigger things with their phone." Given that the Note range has typically launched in this timeframe and with a larger display than its Galaxy S cousins as well as the fact that Samsung itself has made it fairly clear it doesn't plan on dropping the Note brand, there's little else it could be.

Exact specifications for the Note 8 haven't been announced or leaked to date, but most pundits suggest that Samsung will go with a duo of either the Snapdragon 835 or its own Exynos 8895 CPU alongside possibly 6GB of RAM.

Samsung is also in an interesting position when it comes to screen size, with its own Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8+ leveraging ever larger screen sizes for its regular Galaxy S lines this year. The S-Pen is clearly highlighted in the invitation, so we can expect to see its return to Samsung's mobile lines.

Whatever Samsung announces, it will be looking to put the disastrous fate of the Galaxy Note 7 well behind it. We'll be following the launch as it happens, so stay tuned for all the latest Galaxy Note 8 news.
