How can I save money on a rental car?
A few tips to shave dollars off your rental include:
Use deals and coupon codes: Many rental companies offer deals and discounts to entice you to book with them. Look for the "deals" section on their website to see what's available.
Say no to extras: Optional extras such as GPS, booster seats and baby seats come at an added cost. If you can, use your phone instead of hiring a GPS and bring your own booster seat.
Fill up the tank before you return it: If you return your vehicle with a half-empty tank you'll be charged by the company for it to be refilled. This is at a premium compared to if you swung by the local petrol station before you hit the airport.
Shop around for insurance: Car rental excess insurance is something all rental companies try to sell you. And while it's convenient to purchase through them, it's not always the cheapest option. Before you tick that yes box, shop around online for rental insurance that works for your circumstances.
Are airport car rentals cheaper?
Renting from the airport counter generally costs more than renting from outside the airport. This is due to the cost to rent space at the airport, but also because airport car rentals can afford to charge a premium due to demand.
By looking at car rentals outside the airport you could find yourself a bargain. As a bonus, it's common for them to offer to pick you up from the airport to take you to their offices.
Do car rental prices go down closer to the date?
While we can't guarantee this to be true, it can and has happened.
This is because car hire companies would much prefer to have vehicles rented out than sitting idly in their lots. So if they know that multiple vehicles are available in the next couple of days, it's possible they'll drop the cost to rent them to encourage you to book.
