• How else can I save on my Virgin Australia flight?

  • Lite fares: In 2021, Virgin Australia introduced a new economy fare tier called Lite. Essentially it's a budget ticket which only includes your seat and carry-on luggage. It can save you from $20 a flight.
  • Join Velocity: Virgin's frequent flyer program Velocity is free to join and lets you earn points on flights as well as any purchases you make with its partners. Earn enough points and you could redeem them for free flights.

• Do I earn Velocity points for Virgin sale fares?

  Virgin Australia sale fares do earn points, but with a twist. For domestic, trans-Tasman and Pacific Virgin Australia flights, the number of Velocity Points you earn is based on the cost of the ticket. For every $1 you spend, you get 5 Velocity Points.

  So the cheaper the ticket, the fewer points you'll earn. That means that sale fares will earn points, but always at lower rates than regular fares.

  There's a second twist to be aware of. Silver, gold and platinum members score a points bonus on ticket purchases, increasing the number of Velocity Points they get.

  However, the bonus does not apply to domestic "Getaway" fares, and those are usually the ones included in a sale. So if you're in one of those tiers, your ticket will most likely only earn the regular 5 Velocity Points per $1 spent.

  For codeshare flights operated by Virgin Australia partners such as Etihad and Delta your points are based on the fare class and the distance travelled.
