Google Pixel 7: Australian specs, pricing and release date
The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are about to launch in Australia; here's what you'll get and how much you'll pay for Google's next premium phone.
Google's Pixel 7 event wasn't just about the Pixel 7 - given it also announced the Pixel Watch and showed off the Pixel Tablet - but it was clearly the star of the show.
Here's what you need to know about Google's latest premium smartphone family.
When can I buy a Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro in Australia?
Google's opened pre-orders for the Pixel 7, with general Australian availability from 14 October 2022. That's based on shipping and availability from Google, so depending on stock numbers that may be a little later in terms of when you actually hold one in your hands.
How much does the Pixel 7 cost in Australia?
Google has continued with its strategy of pricing the Pixel to go, providing both the base model and the Pixel 7 Pro at price points markedly lower than the competition from the likes of Apple or Samsung. Here's the pricing for each model:

If those prices look familiar, it's because Google hasn't made any changes to its Pixel pricing since the Pixel 6 -- nice one, Google!
Will I be able to get a Google Pixel 7 on contract in Australia?
Absolutely.
Telstra's opened up pre-orders for the Pixel 7 phones with a bonus Nest Hub, Pixel Stand 2nd Gen and Pixel Buds A-Series thrown in for good measure. Vodafone, meanwhile, is offering a $300 Google Store voucher with Pixel 7 pre-orders.
At the time of writing, Optus is yet to update with any sign of Pixel 7 availability, but we'll update as new plan details come to light.

The specifications for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are good - as you'd expect from a flagship phone in 2022, although there's not a lot here that on paper appears world-beating.
Google has long traded on the idea that its software smarts and AI optimisations can make the difference in terms of real-world phone performance, which is why Pixel phones for so long rested on much simpler camera systems, for example.
We'll have to see what kinds of differences, and what the performance potential of Google's new Tensor G2 processor is to see how muscular it is against stiff competition from Qualcomm and especially Apple.
On the battery front there's little changed, but then this is an area where Google didn't need to do much, as the Pixel 6 and especially Pixel 6 Pro were amongst our best battery performers last year.
