After years of waiting, Kayo is finally adding 4K.

Kayo has announced that it will finally be adding 4K capability right in time for all the big winter sporting codes.

However, in doing so the Premium subscription is being discontinued and the Basic plan is receiving another price rise.

When will Kayo have 4K?

Starting off with the good news, there is the long awaited 4K addition to Kayo.

From 14 February 2024 (bumped up from 29 February), the likes of the NRL, AFL, F1, Super Netball and cricket will be available in 4K on a Kayo Basic subscription.

The not so good news is that the cost of 4K is being passed onto customers.

As such, Kayo Basic will be increasing in cost from $30 a month to $35 a month.

This is the third price rise for the Basic package since its inception, after last jumping from $27.50 to $30 a month in February 2023.

It's also the same strategy that Kayo's sister product BINGE used when it added 4K, passing on the cost to customers.

The Kayo One plan will still remain $25 a month and feature only HD capability.

What is happening to Kayo Premium?

The Kayo Premium package will be discontinued. In fact the package was pulled from being offered as of 16 January.

What happens to existing Premium subscribers is as follows.

Kayo said "Existing Premium subscribers will be migrated to Kayo Basic between 14 February-12 March based on their billing date".

So it's essentially just being turned into Kayo Basic.

You will also have the option to downgrade to the Kayo One package.

Kayo told Finder "Over 90% of our customer base use 1 or 2 streams to watch their favourite sport".

So while the change should only affect a few people, given Kayo has over 1.4 million subscribers it's still more than 100,000 users who need to make a change.

What's the best Kayo package for you now?

This one is a fairly simple question, with 2 key points to consider.

If you share your Kayo account with someone or want to watch sports in 4K, then Kayo Basic will be the best package for you.

Otherwise if you're the only person that uses Kayo and you're happy with the current streaming quality or you don't have a 4K compatible device, then you can save $10 a month by only paying for Kayo One.

Though, we are speculating that some Kayo discounts will be available in the near future.

Foxtel, the owner of Kayo, is launching a new service called Hubbl, which will act as a streaming aggregator.

While full details are yet to be announced we are speculating that you may have the opportunity to bundle services through Hubbl for a discount.
