New on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, Stan, BINGE and more January 2024

Here's a look at all the content worth streaming over the summer break.

January normally means some time off for most people, so you might want to spend some time on the couch in front of the TV (and in air conditioning) catching up on what's new on streaming.

Finder has had a look through January release schedule so you can see whether you want to sign up for, switch to, or if it's even worth holding on to specific streaming services.

What's streaming on Netflix in January 2024?

Netflix has the anticipated coming of age TV series Boy Swallows Universe new on streaming in January, based on the popular Trent Dalton novel of the same name. Other new Netflix original series streaming in January include Griselda about the woman who created one of the most profitable cartels in history and The Brothers Sun, where a Taipei triad member heads to Los Angeles to protect his strong-willed mother and oblivious younger brother.

After a big month in December, it's a quiet January for movies on Netflix, with only a handful of new releases, none of them really worthy of having their name on the marquee. The most interesting is probably Society of the Snow, about the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster where survivors lasted 2 months in the remote mountain range.

Netflix also continues its rollout of sports documentaries, with part 2 of tennis series Break Point and Six Nations: Full Contact, following the 2023 rugby union tournament.

Aside from Boys Swallows Universe and The Brothers Sun (because of Michelle Yeoh's presence), you can probably give Netflix a miss this month.

Netflix starts at $6.99 a month, but that contains ads. If you want no ads, it costs at least $16 a month. There is no free trial.

What's new to streaming on BINGE and Foxtel Now in January 2024?

BINGE has a mix of new and returning shows coming in January.

There are a couple of big shows dropping, with the next chapter in the True Detective series, Night Country. There's also the series Ted, which is a prequel of the movie of the same name about a teddy bear who comes to life.

Of other new shows dropping, they aren't as high profile but could be interesting like documentary The Secrets of Penthouse about the adult magazine, and adult animation In The Know.

Vanderpump Rules is back with new episodes, following in the wake of #Scandoval.

Fans of British TV could find some value in BINGE and Foxtel Now in January, with Belgravia: The Next Chapter as well as new episodes of Call The Midwife, Silent Witness and the UK Taskmaster New Year Special 2024.

It's a bit light on for new movies coming to the service during January, with the highlight probably being raunchy comedy No Hard Feelings.

These TV shows and movies will also be streaming on Foxtel Now.

While there's not many big wattage titles dropping, Ted and the return of True Detective will likely make a splash, so you can sign up for either if those particularly interest you.

If you want BINGE, it starts at $10 a month for the Basic plan, which contains ads. If you don't want ads on BINGE, you're looking at $18 a month at least. Whatever plan you choose, you can try it out with a 7-day free trial.

This is the cheapest way to watch these shows and movies, as for Foxtel Now, it starts at $25 a month for the Essentials pack. But if you wanted to watch movies too, you'd need to add the Movies pack, so you're looking at $45 a month. If you're new to Foxtel Now though, you get a 10-day free trial

What's new on Stan in January 2024?

One of Stan's favourite shows returns with a new seasons in January, RuPaul's Drag Race. Also returning with new episodes are The Tourist and Hightown.

The big drop in January for Stan though is original series Prosper. The drama is set in the inner sanctum of an evangelical megachurch, run by a wealthy and powerful family. When their founder announces a US expansion, the collision between faith and ambition threatens to tear his family and church apart. It's got a top flight Australiasian cast including Richard Roxburgh, Rebecca Gibney and Ewen Leslie.

Aside from that, it's mostly some older TV shows and movies making their way to the service in January. If you haven't seen Everything Everywhere All At Once yet you'll have to watch it when it drops on Stan, or you can catch up with a whole bunch of Fast & Furious movies.

The prospect of Prosper is exciting, plus the quality of RuPaul's Drag Race and The Tourist is known, so if they sound like enough, then you can sign up to Stan this month.

What's streaming on Prime Video in January 2024?

The big release for Prime Video in January is Expats. Set in Hong Kong, Expats stars Nicole Kidman as one of 3 women whose lives intersect after a family tragedy. The show looks at privilege and examines what happens when it's unclear who is a victim and who is responsible.

Another series to keep an eye out for is Dance Life, which follows students in their final year at Australia's elite Brent Street dance studio.

There are a bunch of movies coming too including sci-fi relationship Foe, sports comedy The Underdoggs, action thriller Role Play, plus Joy Ride and Sound of Freedom after their cinema runs.

If the wattage of Nicole Kidman in Expats sounds appealing, you can definitely sign up for Prime Video this month. The other releases may not be as high profile, but could be an entertaining way to get some viewing in over summer.

What's new streaming on Disney Plus in January 2024?

The most anticipated show on Disney Plus in January, and quite possibly for the year, is Marvel's Echo. After debuting in Hawkeye, the character gets her own spin-off show. The show has Echo, aka Maya Lopez, pursued by Wilson Fisk's criminal empire. And early indications are it could be of the vibe of Netflix's Daredevil series, which is very exciting indeed.

Another new series to debut is the murder mystery Death and Other Details.

Patient Bob's Burgers fans will also get season 14 episodes in January, while you can catch some new docuseries such as A Real Bug's Life, which looks at different micro bug worlds around the world, plus Choir, about the Detroit Youth Choir preparing for the performance of its lifetime.

So fans of Marvel and Bob's Burgers will be very excited by Disney Plus in January and stick by it, but there might not be the general interest for those outside of them.

You can sign up to Disney Plus for $13.99 a month, but there's no free trial.

What's new on Paramount Plus in January 2024?

The main hook for Paramount Plus in January is the premiere of the Sexy Beast series, a prequel to the 2000 crime movie of the same name.

There's also new episodes of reality series Geordie Shore and Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, period drama The Gilded Age, comedy Big Boys and medical drama SkyMed.

Paramount Plus also keeps up its run of music documentaries, with June, about June Carter Cash.

There's also the usual few things to keep the younger kids happy such as new episodes of Deer Squad.

If you're excited by the arrival of Sexy Beast or a fan of the returning shows, then you can sign up for Paramount Plus, otherwise the new additions might not be enough for you.

What's streaming on BritBox, Hayu, Apple TV Plus and more in January 2024

The smaller players don't have the same number of releases as streaming giants like Netflix and BINGE. So even though these might cost less than some of the major services, they have less new TV shows and movies. However, if you're a fan of a particular genre you might find something of value in these.

Look out for UK crime thriller Criminal Record on Apple TV Plus in January, about detectives in a tug of war over a high-profile murder case.

Speaking of UK shows BritBox delivers new episodes of everyone's favourite crime-solving priest in Father Brown, and the drama Screw, which follows officers at a British prison.

Hayu is again the home of reality with new episodes of Vanderpump Rules, as everyone attempts to pick up the pieces following the scandalous falling out that jolted the tight-knit friend group in the last season.

Shudder offers more horror with Suitable Flesh, about a psychiatrist who helps a patient with extreme personality disorder, but which soon leads her into occult danger.

More UK shows will land on Acorn TV in January, such the most recent season of the police procedural and serialised crime drama Crossroads.

Shudder and Acorn TV are also available as part of AMC Plus. So you get all of what features on those 2 services, plus other shows like the first 2 seasons of Alex Rider, based on the bestselling teen spy novel franchise.
