Where to buy

Samsung has slightly altered its smartphone naming schemes for 2020. At one time you might have thought that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus would be the flagship model, but in 2020 that plaudit goes to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. That leaves the Galaxy S20 Plus as the mid-range model; a little lower in features and screen size than the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but a little bit better than the Galaxy S20.

The Galaxy S20+ was unveiled at Samsung's "Galaxy Unpacked" event on 11 February, alongside the smaller Galaxy S20 and premium Galaxy S20 Ultra handsets, as well as the Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone.

Design

  The Galaxy S20+ features a 6.7-inch Quad HD Dynamic AMOLED display. That's still a large phone, and at 161.9 x 73.7 x 7.8mm and 186 grams it's got a solid presence in your hand.

  In resolution terms it has a 3,200 x 1,440 pixel resolution, identical to that of the Galaxy S20 or Galaxy S20 Ultra, and certainly ultra sharp. The primary display features one of Samsung's "Infinity O" holepunch cameras, located in the top centre of the screen. It utilises an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner for unlocking and a 120Hz-capable display. "Capable" is the key term there, as by default the display is set to run at a more moderate 60Hz.

  The Samsung Galaxy S20+ will ship in three colour choices: Cosmic Grey, Cloud Blue or Cloud Pink. No, we've no idea why Grey is a cosmic colour while Blue or Pink are cloud colours either.

Camera

  While the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the king of the camera space in Samsung's array, the mid-range status of the Galaxy S20+ still allows it some premium camera features.

  At the rear of the Galaxy S20+, you'll find a a 12MP ultra-wide f/2.2 sensor, 12MP wide f/1.8 sensor and 64MP f/2.0 telephoto lens, offering a wide range of shooting modes. There's also a depth/time of flight style sensor that Samsung calls its "DepthVision" camera for more accurate focus effects.

  The Samsung Galaxy S20+ uses a hybrid digital zoom feature to offer up to 30x effective zoom. As with most combination zooms you can expect some image degradation at full zoom, and the use of a tripod is recommended unless you really like blurry photos.

  Samsung's also promising the ability to take multiple shots from different sensors, a feature it calls "Single Take", whether you're shooting video or stills. Speaking of video, the Galaxy S20 Ultra will be capable of shooting at up to 8K resolution if that takes your fancy.

  At the front of the Galaxy S20+ you'll find a 10MP selfie camera, located in that "Infinity O" hole.

Performance

  The Galaxy S20+ is produced in two different configurations, with either a a 7nm 64-bit Octa-Core Processor at up to 2.7Ghz or a 7nm 64-bit Octa-Core Processor at up to 2.8Ghz according to Samsung's official specification sheet. That's almost certainly either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 or Samsung's own Exynos 990 processor. Based on prior history the Exynos variant is the most likely to hit Australian shores.

  The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is available either as a 4G LTE-only handset or as a 5G model for additional cost. Here the "plus" factor does have a difference, because it'll support both sub-6 and mmWave 5G frequencies. Get the regular Galaxy S20, even in its 5G variant, and you're looking at a sub-6 phone only.

  The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is an Android 10 phone with Samsung's own "OneUI" launcher on top, as well as support for a range of Samsung services including the company's own Bixby assistant and Samsung Pay.

Battery life

  The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is nicely equipped in battery terms, at least in theory with a 4,500mAh battery and support for up to 45W USB-C cabled charging. It's worth noting that the in-box charger only supplies up to 25W. If you want the fastest possible charging for your Samsung Galaxy S20+, you'll have to fork out extra for a charger to do that.

  We'll have more details around the Galaxy S20+'s actual battery life once we've had the opportunity to put one to the test.

Early outlook

• Might just be the "value" proposition in the Galaxy S20 family

• What do we want to see from the Galaxy S20+?

  It's always tricky being the middle child in a smartphone family. You're not the cheapest, but you're also not the fanciest either.

  However, the Galaxy S20+ might just have the best of both worlds in its favour. It's slightly better than the Galaxy S20, especially in 5G terms and also in screen size, which could have its appeal. You don't get the quite insane camera found on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but you're not paying its extreme asking price either.

Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S20+ at its Galaxy Unpacked event on 11 February in San Francisco, which equated out to early on 12 February 2020 in Australia. That's the same date that it went on pre-sale, with actual availability from 6 March 2020.

There are three different variants of the Galaxy S20+ to consider. The entry-level 4G-only model ships with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for $1,499. At $1,649, you'll get the 5G variant with 12GB RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. Finally for $1,899 you'll score a 5G-capable Galaxy S20+ with 12GB RAM and 512GB of onboard storage.
