About Singles' Day
Singles' Day officially kicks off on November 11.
Singles' Day originated in China in the 1990s. The accepted legend is that students of Nanjing University began exchanging gifts to non-romantic partners to counterbalance Valentine's Day.
11 November was reportedly chosen to represent "single sticks", which is Chinese slang referring to bachelors.
Today, Singles' Day is one of the biggest events on the shopping calendar, particularly across much of Asia.
