iPhone 14: Australian specs, pricing and release date

The Apple iPhone 14 has been revealed. Here's what you'll pay, what you'll get and when you can get one in Australia.

Apple's big "Far Out" launch event was headlined by the launch of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series.

As is usually the case, Apple's launch was heavy on the hype, but here's what you need to know if you're keen on scoring an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro in Australia.

When can I buy an iPhone 14 in Australia?

The timeframes for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models vary just a little depending on which model you want.

All models will go on pre-order from 9 September 2022, with the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max becoming available in Australia on 16 September 2022.

The new model in the line-up, the iPhone 14 Plus, also goes on pre-order at the same time, but you'll have to wait a little longer for that one with availability from 7 October 2022.

Either way, Australians do win out in the time zone lottery. We don't have to wait for iPhones to go on sale in the US, meaning we get them first in the world.

How much will the iPhone 14 cost in Australia?

Here's how much each variant will cost in Australia:

ModelAustralian RRP
Apple iPhone 14 128GB$1,399
Apple iPhone 14 256GB$1,579
Apple iPhone 14 512GB$1,899
Apple iPhone 14 Plus 128GB$1,579
Apple iPhone 14 Plus 256GB$1,749
Apple iPhone 14 Plus 512GB$2,099
Apple iPhone 14 Pro 128GB$1,749
Apple iPhone 14 Pro 256GB$1,899
Apple iPhone 14 Pro 512GB$2,249
Apple iPhone 14 Pro 1TB$2,599
Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max 128GB$1,899
Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max 256GB$2,099
Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max 512GB$2,419
Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB$2,769

Those baseline prices – ignoring the iPhone 14 Plus that didn't exist in an iPhone 13 variant – are uniformly $50 more than the prior generation, which is a mild annoyance given Apple's insistence that US prices had remained the same for its customers there.

Will I be able to get an iPhone 14 on contract in Australia?

Absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt.

While the very first generation iPhone never officially launched in Australia, every single other model has made its way to our shores with carriers falling over themselves to offer Apple's popular handsets.

The way contracts work for phones has changed a lot in recent years. You effectively end up paying off the phone in installments rather than having it heavily subsidised within a phone contract the way you used to.

Apple's strong position with the iPhone means that it also controls when carriers can announce their plan terms. You can see the iPhone 14 plan pricing from Australia's major telcos here.

One limitation with carrier plans if history is any guide is if Apple does launch 1TB Pro models, they're unlikely to be available on contract terms.

What else is new about the new iPhone 14?

As with previous years, this does depend on the model you choose, with the baseline iPhone 14 variants notably sticking with the same A15 Bionic found in last year's phone models. That's still fast – and quicker than any processor found in a current Android phone – but if you want the full speed experience, you'll need to pay the higher price for the A16 Bionic found in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Emergency satellite messaging is also a feature of the new iPhones, although it won't be available at launch and it's only coming to the US and Canada in November for now. Eventually, that will be a paid service, but Apple says it's going to be free for the first 2 years.
