Top tips to navigate the Australia Day sales

  • Compare. Unfortunately there'll be two types of retailers selling goods on Australia Day. Some retailers will buy products at cheap prices and in bulk so they can fulfill their customer's needs and still offer a discount. Others might keep their prices steady or even inflate them. Do your research by making calls or browsing similar products online to ensure you're not being ripped off.
  • Avoid Australian-themed merchandise that you don't need. Everyone wants to display a bit of Aussie pride on Australia Day, so it's easy to see why many people will want to buy merchandise and clothing with Australian flags and other national symbols on it. If the item you're looking for doesn't really need an Australian flag printed on it, you might want to avoid it: some retailers will discount these pieces, but others might jack prices up.

Australia Day shopping hours

Most larger department stores and supermarkets will be open on Australia Day. However, smaller specialty stores may not be open. Stores may also have shorter trading hours. For more information, check the trading hours section of the shopping centre you wish to visit on the Australia Day public holiday, or give them a call if you know the number.

Australia Day events and history

Australia Day marks the day that the First Fleet sailed into Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788. In 1838 the day was proclaimed as a public holiday to be celebrated each year. Later, in 1946, a committee was established in Melbourne to provide information about the day, followed by the other states. By 1994, all Australian states and territories were celebrating Australia Day on the same day.
