How to find the best Boxing Day sales in Melbourne

Boxing Day is not just a big day for shoppers, but for retailers as well. This is the biggest day of the year for them and, as such, they will get super competitive, trying to bring you the best deals and the biggest range of products. This competition can be overwhelming for shoppers as they are inundated with discounts and sale sections.

To help you determine where the best Boxing Day sales in Melbourne are and how to avoid falling into sales traps, we’ve written a quick little guide.

Discounts

The problem: Stores find various ways to lure shoppers in and it's usually by quoting huge discounts. But don’t judge a store by its discount. Some stores only apply these discounts to a limited range of products, or they trick you by marking up the price before Christmas and then discounting the inflated price. Even if you do find a product that is hugely discounted, don’t fall into the trap of buying something you don’t need just because it's on sale.

The solution: Most stores will list their Boxing Day sale discounts online beforehand so have a shop around to find the best deals before you head to the shops.

Quality

The problem: A lot of stores will use the Boxing Day sales to offload their low-quality items that didn’t sell well before Christmas. Take a look at the kind of products they have on sale and see if they are worth buying. If a store has a huge stack of the same product for a hugely discounted rate, then this is usually a sign that it's a low-quality or unpopular product.

The solution: You don't necessarily need to avoid lower-quality items, but keep your wits about you. If the item is something you are sceptical about, take the time to assess the quality and ask yourself if you would buy it if it wasn't on sale. If the answer is no, it's best to leave it and move on.

Crowds

The problem: If you are shopping the Boxing Day sales you are going to encounter crowds. Sometimes these crowds can help you find where the best sales are – huge crowds on Boxing Day usually form around huge discounts – but to find the best Boxing Day sales, crowds may also prove to be a huge hindrance.

The solution: Shop online. If thousands of people scrambling around for discounts doesn’t sound appealing, then shop from the comfort of your own home. Online stores often have the same Boxing Day discounts as they do in store, meaning you can still take advantage of the sales, but without compromising your comfort.

Quick tips for Melbourne Boxing Day sales

  • Take public transport to the shops or arrange for someone to pick you up to save time and money on parking.
  • Get started early so you don’t miss out on any good deals and so you can get your shopping done quicker.
  • Make a plan with whoever you are heading to the sales with to make sure you get the most out of your time there. Organise which shops you’re going to go to and what you need from each shop.
  • Set a budget so you don’t overspend.
  • Shop online to bag early Boxing Day bargains and avoid the crowds.
