Amazon Prime has expanded its free one-day delivery footprint to encompass more cities across Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

Amazon Prime members in Brisbane, Geelong, Gosford, Newcastle and Wollongong can now enjoy free one-day delivery.

It's the next step in a promised aggressive expansion of Amazon's delivery distribution network in Australia.

Previously, the service was only offered in select areas of Sydney and Melbourne.

More cities on the way

Amazon Australia has confirmed it will be adding more cities to its free one-day delivery service in the months ahead, including Adelaide.

"By building fulfilment centres and delivery stations close to where our customers live and work, packages travel shorter distances, which enables us to speed up delivery," the company said in a statement.

Its next major fulfilment centre is expected to open sometime in 2025.

How to get free one-day delivery

To qualify for free one-day delivery, you need to be an active Amazon Prime member (in addition to living in one of the aforementioned cities.)

A Prime membership currently costs $9.99 per month or $79 for a year.

The annual $79 subscription saves you around $40 compared to paying month-to-month and it also protects you against any price increases over the next 12 months.

It's worth noting that this perk only applies to select products and sellers. Eligible items have a "Prime FREE One-Day" logo. There's also a countdown timer that determines whether one-day delivery is possible.

With that said, free one-day shipping is just one of several perks that comes with an Amazom Prime subscription.

What comes with Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is a premium membership to the Amazon marketplace that provides a wide range of perks and benefits, including:

  • Free 2-day domestic delivery
  • Free Standard International Delivery on eligible orders over $49
  • Prime Video: A Netflix-style streaming service with thousands of titles
  • Amazon Music: A Spotify competitor boasting 2 million songs
  • Prime Reading: Free access to thousands of ebooks, short stories, comics and children's books via the Kindle Store
  • Prime Gaming: Free access to a selection of PC games, with more added every month (plus free in-game loot for select titles)

Amazon Prime previously cost $6.99 per month, but was hiked up to $9.99 in May last year.

While that's quite the jump, the service remains affordable compared to the USA where customers pay US$14.99 per month - the equivalent of $23 AUD.
