What to consider when shopping for TV deals on Black Friday (28 November)?

Size

This is the most obvious factor to consider. While bigger is typically better, there comes a point where a TV can be too big for the space you plan to put it in, leaving you with an experience akin to sitting in the front row at a movie theatre. Put simply, the larger the TV, the further away from it you'll want to sit to achieve the ideal viewing experience, so bear that in mind before cramming an 80-inch behemoth into a living room barely double that square.

Resolution

Alongside screen size, resolution is paramount to getting a quality picture out of your TV. Full HD (otherwise known as 1080p) is the bare minimum these days, but you're more likely to find most TVs supporting 4K resolution instead. 4K, as the name implies, delivers four times the resolution of regular HD, but bear in mind that you'll only notice a significant difference in quality when viewing 4K-compatible content. Watching an HD movie or playing a game in 1080p isn't going to look a whole lot different than it would on an HD TV set, and support for 4K is still relatively low across the board. Still, most 4K sets are priced similarly to older 1080p models nowadays, so picking the future-proof option is typically the way to go.

Audio

Many manufacturers are opting to meet the demand for thinner, lighter displays, reducing the amount of available space for speakers. Consequently, it may be necessary to invest in a soundbar if you require booming sound.

Streaming

If you currently subscribe to one or more Australian streaming services such as Stan or Foxtel, check the specifications to see if the apps you need are built in. Come models even have dedicated buttons on the remote, which is super handy.

HDMI ports

It's a good idea to check how many HDMI ports a TV comes with, especially if you're planning to connect multiple consoles, streaming boxes and other devices. Cheaper TVs tend to come with fewer ports, so check if it will match your needs before purchasing. Also keep in mind that the location of the ports may affect your TV set-up, as ports that stick out from the back are difficult to access when a TV is wall-mounted.
