What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the sale event that falls on the Monday after Black Friday. In 2025, Black Friday is on the 28 November and Cyber Monday is on 1 December. This entire sale period is often referred to as Cyber Weekend as deals and sales tend to run over the four days.

Cyber Monday originated as an American sale event but now is a very significant and popular shopping day for Australians. Each year, more and more Australian brands and retailers offer Cyber Monday deals. This means that savvy shoppers are able to pick up a great bargain across a range of items including fashion, tech, beauty, home and electrical.

The term 'Cyber Monday' was coined by Ellen Davis and Scott Silverman of the US' National Retail Federation and Shop.orgin 2005. This was way back when buying stuff on the internet was not a popular choice. This sale event was created in a deliberate attempt to boost online sales and compete with big brands that offered major sales on Black Friday. However, once the event grew in popularity, the big brands jumped on board with their own online sales.

Originally, the main difference between these two sale events was that Black Friday was held in-stores and Cyber Monday was only online. Now Black Friday is both in-store and online, whereas Cyber Monday is only online.

When do Cyber Monday 2025 sales start for Australians?

Cyber Monday deals is starting on the 1 December. However, what you may not realise is that unlike physical stores, these sales start smack bang on midnight. As a result, we would strongly suggest setting your alarms or having a bit of a late night to get ahead on some of the deals. You can also check back here where we will be live updating all the best Cyber Monday sales so you can see them all in one place.

You might have realised by now that Cyber Monday is actually Monday and Tuesday due to the time difference between Australia and the US. Aussie retailers will begin their sales at 12am Monday, with US and UK retailers following on Monday evening. The international deals will continue until Tuesday in Australia.

Are the deals only on Cyber Monday?

No. Deals start the day after Thanksgiving (Friday) on what's called Black Friday. It's the first day of the holiday and Christmas shopping period, and therefore the first day of sales.

Some even argue that you're better off going shopping on Black Friday (or even on Thanksgiving), as by the time Cyber Monday rolls around you'll find you've been pipped to the post with an out-of-stock sign. According to Adobe research, it's even suggested that prices are lowest on Thanksgiving and increase as Black Friday and Cyber Monday come around.

It's up to you, honestly, but just know that the sales do start as early as Thanksgiving Thursday.

Tips and tricks for Australians on Cyber Monday

  • Do your research. Unlike Australia’s answer to Cyber Monday, Click Frenzy, many retailers publish their deals before the day, meaning you have time to consider your options and really find the best bargain. Then, there’s also Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day, and PRE-Thanksgiving sales you should consider. Our suggestion? Start hunting for bargains now, because a lot of retailers are already advertising, if not selling, them.
  • Make sure the retailer ships to Australia. Always a good one to check before you get excited over a deal. That being said, you can now take advantage of Australia Post’s ShopMate service, which provides you with a US postal address to get items shipped to, before delivering them to Australia.
  • Shop around and shop early. You might find a better deal elsewhere or prior to Cyber Monday. If it’s a bargain on Thursday or Friday with a price you’re willing to pay, jump on it before it either goes up (a common ploy many retailers do to make a little more from the shopping hype) or before it is sold out.
