How to choose the right tech

Buying technology can be overwhelming due to the sheer volume of specs and acronyms. To make the right choice, consider these specific factors:

The ecosystem

This is often the first decision you need to make. Devices work best when they "talk" to each other. If you already own an iPhone, a Mac or iPad will integrate seamlessly, whereas a Windows laptop might create friction. Switching operating systems (e.g., Android to iOS) often requires repurchasing apps and moving data, so factor that "switching cost" into your decision.

Release cycles

Unlike appliances, tech becomes obsolete quickly. Most major brands release new models annually (usually around September/October for phones). Buying a device right before a new launch means you pay full price for older tech. Conversely, buying immediately after a launch can score you a discount on the previous generation.

Software support

Hardware is only half the story. Check how many years of software updates the manufacturer promises. A cheaper phone that stops getting security updates after two years will need replacing sooner than a slightly more expensive one that guarantees five years of support.

Storage

Running out of space is the most common frustration for tech users. "Cloud storage" is an option, but it requires a monthly subscription. If you plan to take lots of 4K videos or download games, it is almost always worth paying extra upfront for the larger physical storage model (For example, 256GB over 128GB).

Processing power (RAM)

Don't just look at the processor name; look at the RAM. This determines how many apps you can have open at once without the device slowing down. For a modern laptop, 8GB is the absolute minimum, but 16GB is recommended for longevity.

Battery & charging

Manufacturer claims about "all-day battery" are tested in perfect conditions. Look for independent reviews that test "real-world" usage. Also, check the charging speed—some devices can charge from 0% to 50% in 15 minutes, which changes how you use them.

Connectivity

Check the ports! As devices get thinner, manufacturers are removing ports. Ensure the laptop has enough USB-C or HDMI ports for your needs, or factor in the cost of buying a "dongle" or hub. For wireless, look for Wi-Fi or 6E for future-proofing.

Screen refresh rate

If you are buying a TV, monitor, or premium phone, look for "refresh rate" (measured in Hz). A standard screen is 60Hz, but a 120Hz screen updates twice as fast, making scrolling and gaming look incredibly smooth. Once you try it, it's hard to go back.

Repairability

Tech is fragile. Check if the device has a high repairability score. Can the battery be replaced easily? Are screen repairs affordable? Some brands make it very difficult (and expensive) to fix a cracked screen.

What should I do with my old tech?

Upgrading your phone or laptop leaves you with the issue of what to do with the old one. Unlike appliances, electronic waste (e-waste) contains sensitive data and hazardous materials.

Crucial first step: Before disposing of any tech, ensure you have backed up your files and performed a factory reset to wipe all personal data.

If the device is still recent (1-3 years old) and in good condition, tech holds its value well. You can sell it on eBay, Gumtree, or trade-in sites. Many manufacturers (like Apple and Samsung) offer trade-in credit toward your new purchase.

If the device is broken or obsolete, do not throw it in the bin. Batteries and circuit boards contain hazardous materials like lithium and lead. Look for a MobileMuster drop-off point for phones, or check your local council for e-waste recycling days.

5 tips for buying technology

  1. Beware the "latest and greatest" trap. Tech suffers from diminishing returns. The difference between this year's $2,000 phone and last year's model is often negligible. Unless you need a specific new feature, buying the previous generation or a "mid-range" model is often the smartest financial move.
  2. Check the "In the Box" list. Modern tech often ships without accessories that used to be standard. Many new phones do not come with a wall charger or headphones, and printers often don't include the USB cable. Check what's missing so you don't get home and realise you can't charge your new device.
  3. Student and Education pricing. Tech companies are generous with education discounts. If you are buying a laptop or tablet for school or university (or if you are a teacher), check the manufacturer's education store. You can often save hundreds of dollars just by verifying your student status.
  4. Read "long-term" reviews. A device might be great on day one, but how does it perform after six months? Look for "long-term reviews" on YouTube or tech sites to see if issues with battery degradation, overheating, or software bugs appeared over time.
  5. Understand the return policy. Tech compatibility can be tricky. You might buy a monitor that doesn't work with your laptop, or a pair of headphones that fit poorly. Ensure the retailer has a "change of mind" return policy that allows you to open the box and test the product without a heavy restocking fee.
