What stores will have New Year's Day sales?
Unlike Boxing Day, a lot of retail stores choose not to operate on New Year's Day, which limits the number of sales available. For example, Westfield shopping centres in NSW tend to stay closed.
There are exceptions to the rule, however. For example, Target, Kmart and Bunnings will continue to trade on January 1, so pop in and see if you can snag yourself a bargain.
NYD shopping tips
- Shop online. As discussed, many physical stores will be shutting their doors for the public holiday. To get the best bargains, your best bet is to shop online.
- Stick to a budget. Don't get caught overspending. Set and maintain your spending limit to avoid post-sale regrets.
- Prep Your wishlist. Avoid impulse buys by researching beforehand. How much do the items you want usually retail for?
- Focus on the right products. Zoom in on items you missed out on during Christmas. If you've stocked up on apparel and fragrances, pivot to electronics or beauty items.
New Year's Day FAQs
How much can I save?
Discounts can range from 25% to 80% or more off. Bricks and mortar retailers like Target, David Jones and MYER often have loss-leading discounts on major items to try and entice customers into stores.
Are shops open on New Year's Day?
Some large chain stores will remain open on January 1, but others will be shutting their doors for the day. We recommend checking opening times before heading out.
What time do New Year's Day sales start?
Sales that don't go live until New Year's Day generally start at midnight. That said, many retailers have been eager to get their New Year's Day sales live early. Some stores have also elected to extend their Boxing Day sales in lieu of a separate sale.
When do New Year's Day sales end?
This varies from retailer to retailer. Some shops will keep on reducing the price of their old stock until it's all gone, while others will run their sales to a strict deadline. In most cases, the best New Year's Day sales are available throughout the first week of January. Good deals such as 4K TVs will generally sell out quickly.
