What is Amazon Prime Day and how does it work?

Amazon Prime Day

Amazon Prime Day is a global shopping event exclusively for Prime members, offering significant discounts on thousands of items on the Amazon website. This includes third-party sellers and popular products from Nike, Converse, Microsoft, Sony, Samsung, Nintendo, Dell, KitchenAid and hundreds more.

All product categories will be participating in the sale, which means you can score great discounts no matter what you're looking for. In short, if Amazon sells it, a deal should be available during the sale.

Amazon Prime Day is chiefly aimed at Prime customers, which means you will need to be a member to get the best deals. Amazon Prime costs $9.99 per month. However, you can currently sign up for a 30-day free trial. If you time the trial properly, this means you can grab some amazing deals during Amazon Prime Day without paying anything extra.

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is the backbone of Amazon's delivery services, allowing customers to get fast and free deliveries and free returns for the cost of an annual or monthly subscription.

The perks don't just stop there - you also get access to Amazon's streaming services. This includes:

  • Prime Video: A Netflix-style streaming service with over 2,000 titles.
  • Amazon Music: A Spotify competitor boasting 2 million songs.
  • Prime Reading: Free access to thousands of ebooks, short stories, comics and children's books via the Kindle Store.
  • Prime Gaming: Free access to a selection of PC games, with more added every month (plus free in-game loot for select titles).

Different types of Prime Day deals

Amazon has decided to make shopping Prime Day super easy by featuring a colour-coded blue badge on the Prime Day deals. That way, it's super easy to spot the red-hot offers among the madness on Amazon.

There are three different types of deals you ought to know before Prime Day.

  • Deal of the day - This can comprise of a single item or set of closely related items. The offer is usually pretty massive, lasting only for one day.
  • Best deal - This type of offer can last across the whole Prime Day event. Again, it can include just the one product, or multiple related items.
  • Lightning deals - These are one of the most popular offers on-site and are constantly watched by serious bargain hunters. They tend to last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, and are usually featured on highly sought-after products. It can turn the whole experience into a bit of a shopping frenzy - these offers are not for the faint of heart!

What is the Shop Local store on Amazon?

Amazon has recently been putting effort into recognising Australian small businesses on its platform via a dedicated Shop Local store. Australian Prime members will be able to score exclusive discounts from these sellers during Australian Prime Day. If you prefer to shop locally, this is a great way to see a bunch of deals from Aussie-owned businesses in once place.

Does Amazon US ship to Australia?

Yes. When the Australian government extended GST payments to online purchases, Amazon briefly blocked its international sites in this country. However, it quietly reversed this decision shortly afterwards and you can now shop on Amazon's US site should the mood strike you. Just be aware that shipping fees will be higher and some third-party sellers will not send items to international customers. You can also see a range of US products on the Australian site via the Amazon Global Store.

How big is Amazon Prime Day?

Despite the COVID pandemic, Prime Day has continued to explode over the past few years with total sales significantly improving year on year. Last year's sale was the biggest two-day period ever for Amazon's third party sellers with more than 250 million items sold worldwide.

Because of our proximity to the International Date line, Australian Prime subscribers were the first in the world to access the Prime Day offers, including the ones available direct from the US through the global store.

That early start, and the fact that Australians can also take advantage of US sales through the global store means that Aussie Prime members get to enjoy savings across a huge range of categories for a massive 65 hours.

The top-selling products during previous Amazon Prime Days have included the Fire TV Stick 4K, iRobot Roomba 692 Robot Vacuums and Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips. The most popular product categories included tools, beauty, nutrition, baby care, electronics, apparel and household products.

The history of Prime Day

Prime Day was born in 2015, on the eve of the shopping platform's 20th birthday in the US. The goal was to offer a huge volume of deals (more than Black Friday) but make them exclusive for Prime members.

The first event lasted 24 hours and included countries like the US, UK, Spain, Japan, Italy and more. It was so successful, that Amazon has claimed customers bought more items on that first Prime Day than on Black Friday 2014, which was the biggest Black Friday it had ever had at the time.

Since then, Prime Day hasn't showed signs of slowing down, out-doing itself as each year goes by. For Australians, Amazon's launch in Australia in late 2017 has meant that this year is only our fourth Prime Day, but we're confident it's going to be the biggest yet.

Amazon Prime Day vs Black Friday

There's no denying that Prime Day and Black Friday are two of the biggest global shopping events, but they do differ in some ways.

An obvious example is the fact that Prime Day is solely based on the Amazon platform. Black Friday is celebrated by all kinds of retailers, big and small, around the world. It also usually marks the beginning of Christmas gift shopping.

While you've got access to a plethora of stores on Black Friday, Prime Day usually features some pretty hefty discounts - bigger than what you'll see on Black Friday. So if there's something you've had your eye on for a while, and see it discounted for Prime Day, we recommend adding it to cart ASAP. You never know if there'll be enough stock come Black Friday.

In terms of sales, it's a little difficult to judge how successful Black Friday is because there's not one source of truth. However, Prime Day 2020 collected more sales than the previous Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.

In a way, Prime Day is Amazon's own version of a Black Friday. While the retailer still celebrates and joins in on the Black Friday madness, having its own sale event provides it global recognition in the shopping space. It also gives it the chance to say "thank you" to its paying members and get rid of old stock.

As with any huge shopping event, there are pros and cons to shopping on Amazon Prime Day. You can score some of the best deals all year by knowing what to look for and doing a little research beforehand. Here are our top tips for snagging the lowest prices on Prime Day:

  • Get deal alerts. If you've downloaded the Amazon App, you can choose to turn notifications on, meaning you'll get a buzz as soon as your favourite item goes on sale.
  • Know what a deal badge looks like. All Prime Day deals feature a blue badge, making them really easy to spot among the madness on Amazon.
  • Ask Alexa. Have you invested in your own Alexa or Echo device? Simply ask her about the Prime Day deals and you can hear all about them as you make your breakfast or clean up your home. Voice shopping is the new thing!
  • Create a wish list. With the plethora of products available on site, it's a good idea to create a list of all your must-have items. This will allow you to sort out exactly what you want, how much they cost, and how much of a discount they'll have. It also ensures you don't go a little crazy and buy unnecessary sale items on the day.
  • Know when to strike and when to pass. Lightning Deals that are released as often as every five minutes can turn online shopping into a frenzy. While you do need to snap up some items as fast as you can, don't be pressured into clicking "Add to cart" on every single item that flashes across your screen. If you can, do a quick Internet search to make sure the Prime Day price is really as good as it seems.
  • Read the fine print. In the US, some Prime Day deals, particularly on big-ticket electronics like TVs and computers, have hidden the brand name and model number until just before the sale drops, so you should make sure you double-check these details before jumping on a low price.
  • Check reviews. When you feel rushed to snatch up a discount, you might not take the time to read through product reviews like you normally would. Don't skip this step, unless you're already familiar with the product and know for sure it's what you want.
  • Compare prices. Other retailers are aware of the impact Amazon has had on the local marketplace, so don't be surprised to see even more competitive prices on offer from other stores over the Prime Day sale.
